For an adventure that was to be one of the most astonishing of the Doctor's very long life, it all began very quietly.

Sergeant Benton made an instinctive move to dash out of the TARDIS.  But the new Doctor, or as far as Benton was concerned, the old Doctor, Jo's Doctor Two, laid a restraining hand on his arm.

'Steady on, Sergeant, they're out of our reach now.  He knew what he was doing - at least, I hope he did.'

'Will they be all right, Doctor?'

The little man reached up and patted Benton reassuringly on the shoulder.  'As far as I can tell, that stuff out there has gone to a great deal of trouble to get me - or rather, him -, and I doubt if whoever or whatever sent it simply wanted us dead.  No, they've both been transported somewhere.'

'I saw that - the question is, where?'

Doctor Two shrugged.  'Where indeed?'  Suddenly he darted over to the scanner and peered at it.  'Do you know, I think our blobby friend out there has just gone off the boil.'

Benton looked over his shoulder.  The blob of jelly, now shrunken and still, lay quietly in one corner of the laboratory, showing no sign of its former ferocity.  'Right,  let's get some explosives and blow it to smithereens,' said Benton eagerly.

'I think we can be a bit more subtle than that, Sergeant.  We must study it.  It may still have a great deal to tell us.'  He opened the door of the TARDIS, and they both came slowly out into the laboratory.  Cautiously they approached the jelly-blob.  It stirred and crackled, but only very faintly.

The door opened and the Brigadier, revolver in hand, peered cautiously round it.  At the sight of two figures bending over to look at the blob he snapped, 'For Heaven's sake be careful of that stuff.'

At the sound of his voice, Sergeant Benton straightened up and turned round.  So did the second Doctor.

When he saw him the Brigadier opened his mouth like a stranded fish, spluttering to get the words out.  'Oh no!' he gasped finally.

Doctor Two beamed at him.  'Oh yes, Brigadier.  How are you, my dear fellow?'

'Pretty well, thanks,' said the Brigadier, returning the handshake automatically.  Then realising that he was greeting a man who too all intents and purposes no longer existed, he spluttered, 'What the blazes is going on here?'

'It's him, sir,' explained Benton rather obviously.  'The one we met first of all.'

'I can see that.  Why has he changed back again?'

'He hasn't, sir, not exactly.  This one just sort of Popped up.  There are two of them now!.  There was even a third - but he was only on the scanner screen.'

'Heaven preserve us!' said the Brigadier faintly.  He looked for a stool to sit on, but by now they had all disappeared.  He leaned against the wall and spoke in a voice of unnatural calm, 'Sergeant Benton!  Will you please tell me exactly what's been going on?'

Fact and Findings
The first novelisation not to have and the in the title, until the second edition came out in April 1978 and (on the front cover at least) the book became Doctor Who and the Three Doctors, but it reverted to the original in August 1991. By the end of 1982, all new novels were just Doctor Who - .... The reprints continued to be Doctor Who and the ... until the 1990's.

First edition cover price - 35p

The hardback edition was released simultaneously by Allan Wingate.

This was the first adaptation of a Baker & Martin script. The writers never adapted their own work but David Martin did go on to write spin off material - a series of books on K9 and a couple of Make-Your-Own-Adventure books (printed by Severn House in 1986) one of which (Search for the Doctor, ISBN 0 7278 2087 7) features the sixth Doctor, K9 and Drax (from The Armageddon Factor) in a re-battle with Omega, which makes references to the events of The Three Doctors.

Classic chapter title - Attack from the Unknown

The TV character Mr Ollis becomes Mr Hollis in the book.

In 1981, the book was recorded on tape for the visually impaired by the actor Gabriel Woolf.

Later editions were numbered 64 in the Doctor Who library.

The first edition was published by Tandem (ISBN 0 426 10938 4). The novel was reprinted in 1976 and rejacketed in April 1978 when it was printed by W. H. Allen / Wyndham (ISBN 0 426 11578 3). Further reprints followed in 1980, 1982 (W. H. Allen, £1.35) and 1983 (W. H. Allen, £1.35). A final edition came out in August 1991, published by Virgin. The ISBN was again 0 426 11578 3.

Individual books are promoted to book shops by flyers showing a mock-up of the book's cover and some selling points for the novel. The flyer for the 1991 reprint cover bore the tag line Based on a Doctor Who adventure first broadcast in 1872. It was corrected before going to publication. The cover and the USPs (unique selling points) for this release can be seen by clicking on the image.
Cover Data
This cover marked the start of the second wave of covers by Chris Achilleos, following a brief interlude by Peter Brookes. The consistent style of the 1973/4 releases was gone, but the method of depicting the image of the Doctor in black and white, surrounded by colour, continued with diminishing regularity until Doctor Who and the Claws of Axos in 1977.

The original book cover was part of Doctor Who Portfolio No. 1 issued in May 1986 by Titan Books. There were five prints in all. Each print was 295mm by 422mm and produced on high quality art paper. The cost was £5.95.

The April 1978 edition cover, by Jeff Cummins, misnames the book Doctor Who and the Three Doctors (does that make it The Four Doctors?).

The initially proposed 1991 reprint cover bore the tag line Based on a Doctor Who adventure first broadcast in 1872. It was corrected before going to publication.

Alister Pearson's cover artwork for the 1991 reprint was released as a postcard, free with 'Doctor Who Magazine' (number 214), July 1994.

  • I try to maintain page numbers for audiobooks even though obviously there aren't any. I do this to keep track of pages read and I try to use the Kindle version page numbers for this.
  • Synopses marked with an asterisk (*) were generated by an AI. There aren't a lot since this is an iffy way to do it - AI seems to make stuff up.
  • When specific publication dates are unknown (ie prefixed with a "Cir"), I try to get the publication date that is closest to the specific printing that I can.
  • When listing chapters, I only list chapters relevant to the story. I will usually leave off Author Notes, Indices, Acknowledgements, etc unless they are relevant to the story or the book is non-fiction.
  • Page numbers on this site are for the end of the main story. I normally do not include appendices, extra material, and other miscellaneous stuff at the end of the book in the page count.
